In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Success Rates
Evaluating IVF Statistics
Many factors affect IVF success rates so care must be exercised when evaluating program statistics. The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology has recently published guidelines for advertising IVF success rate. The CDC maintains success rate statistics for those programs in the United States that report their data.
Female age is one of the most important variables because older women (low ovarian reserve) typically have lower success rates. Our data demonstrates an equal distribution of women under, and over, thirty five years of age. If a program is treating a greater percentage of young women, the success rates should be higher. Conversely, a program treating a high percentage of women over 35 will probably produce lower success rates. We achieved very high success rates in each age category.
Another factor influencing IVF success rates is the number of embryos transferred. In many cases success rates increase as more embryos are transferred. However, the incidence of high order (>3) multiple births is also increased.
The cause(s) of infertility is also an important variable. Some conditions respond well to IVF treatment, producing high success rates. These might include patients choosing IVF instead of tubal reversal or those with moderate male infertility.
